Heavy duty cable containment support frame 2

Project Brief

As part of a recent hospital development within the midlands, MIDFIX was asked to design and engineer a support frame to support heavy cable containment on a rooftop.

Solution

At first glance, this project seemed relatively simple, design a support frame that could support heavy cable containment; however, it came down to answering the following questions:

1.) How do we create a support frame that can support the heavy cable containment when the primary steels are not level?

2.) Where should the supports be positioned to avoid the considerable lateral forces due to the installation of the cables.

Fixing to the primary steel structure proved problematic because the steels were not at the same level, one steel beam was lower than the other. To resolve this issue, we designed a bespoke bracket to lift the lower steel beam to the same level as the other.

Design calculations were carried out to determine the worst-case load scenario. These calculations showed us that the back-to-back channel was sufficient to support the loads from the goal posts and cable containment.

For every other support, we extended the goal posts in height so that they could be fixed to the steelwork above at different fixing points and at the right orientation to provide a rigid structure. The designed solution could safely support the heavy cable containment pulled through each level, whilst avoiding considerable lateral forces.

All in all, there were some challenges along the way but with the right calculations and design, we managed to overcome the technical challenges and support the cable containment.
